Monday Evening Update - Quick Rain Update

-
Updated: 0055z/20:55/08:55PM
----------------------------------FORECAST----------------------------------
TONIGHT - Temperatures going down to upper 40's, a bit windy with rain showers and t-storms becoming more steady as the night wears on. WATCH for localized flooding in low spots.
TUESDAY - Steady rain should begin to taper off late morning into the afternoon, Lets keep in mind that some of the models have it sticking around past 2pm and tapering off late afternoon, clouds will stick around though clearing through the night as High pressure builds. Highs a tad warmer then today, around 60-62°
WEDNESDAY - A bit warmer, highs in the mid 60's, partly cloudy, a bit breezy, High pressure continues to build into the area.
THURSDAY - Partly cloudy, highs again in mid to upper 60's, not as windy...small chance of a shower or two but doubting it right now.
------------------------FORECAST DISCUSSION--------------------------
As waves of low pressure/shortwaves continue to move along the frontal boundary to the south of us, a more organized mass of rain showers, some t-storms and steady rain will develop tonight and last through the night into tomorrow afternoon before tapering off tomorrow night. Locally heavy rainfall will be possible, the heaviest rain should follow a line from Philly --> NYC northern Suburbs --> Boston before it all ends. CURRENTLY here in Irvington we have recorded 1.03" rain today, and 2.79" rain yesterday (sunday) bringing our total for this system to 3.82"...BASED on the current models, and meso-analysis of the system, I really do think along that line mentioned above, another 1 to 2" of rain before Wednesday will not be uncommon, with totals from the system coming close to or exceeding 5".

As of yesterday morning at 10am, we were at 33% the normal precipitation for the month of May. By midnight last night, we had jumped to 94% of our normal precipitation for May, so that was good good catch up, although ideally it would have been better to have had it spread out over the entire month.
smile emoticon
Oki doki, watch for flooding tomorrow in low spots, enjoy the cool weather, and remember umbrellas! Have a nice night smile emoticon

Sunday Afternoon Update - Here come the DELAYED rains!

-
Updated: 1945z/15:45/3:45PM
----------------------------------FORECAST----------------------------------

REST OF TODAY - Rain showers and localized heavy downpours/t-storms as well as possible HAIL and high wind gusts will move across the area in response to the cold front trudging its way through well to the west of us. Rains will become more organized as evening progresses. Temps maxing out around 80° WATCH FOR FLOODING. FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS IN EFFECT.
TONIGHT - Cold front passes in the late evening probably between 7-9pm, watch those temps plummet into high 50's low 60's across much of the area north of NYC northern suburbs.
MONDAY - Rain for much of the day heavy at times, watch for localized flooding as 1-3" across the area of rain can be expected with this system from late tonight through Tuesday night.. Highs Monday in the HIGH 50's maybe reaching 60-62°
TUESDAY - Watch for Thunderstorms and rain in the morning into the afternoon possible as the system exits to the east, then maybe some partial clearing and the sun should peak out in the late afternoon - need some things to come into play for this to happen so lets wait and seer], highs in the low to mid 60's.
WEDNESDAY - High pressure builds into the area behind the storm system and drier cooler air comes in, Highs in the mid to high 60's maybe up to 70°, clouds in and out and watch for some wind.
--------------------------FORECAST DISCUSSION------------------------
OKI Doki very potent system we got moving into place, lets get into the rains - for the next 2-3 days!!!
Cold front will continue to move southward, right now it is just about 35-50 miles north of us, anyway it will continue southward through the afternoon and will move to the south of us by late tonight - now, if it were just this cold front then the rains would be short and sweet - BUT, big BUT, we have waves of low pressure that will form along the frontal boundary and move NE from the Jersey/Baltimore region through our region and into New England lasting through, AT THE VERY LEAST late late Monday night - but likely into Tuesday afternoon if things shape up well. WE NEED this rain - THAT being said, the ground is dry, and flooding will occur so watch out, especially getting into the Mid Hudson valley and CT/MA border down into Jersey where 2-4" of rain could fall over the next 2-3 days. NYC and Northern Suburbs, including LI and along the Jersey coastline, CT coastline and southern N.E a bit less rain, but still 1-3" with localized higher amounts.
For the immediate afternoon, instability is increasing as we speak as the cold front enhances the lift in front (south) of it, mL Cape is 1200-1800 should increase to 2200-2500 j/kg before decreasing as the Front moves to the south of us...lots of precipitable in the air in excess of 2" across the area will feed the system, and with low winds out of the lower level jet these storms will sit...sit and sit.
Low pressure moves along the front getting into Monday and a shortwave NRG moving across will increase that lift, so watch ot for more heavy rain although not as many t-storms, NE flow develops as High pressure moves into the region Monday night into Tuesday and cooler air/drier - in the mid 60's to low 70's comes into place for much of the week.
SO...this is all good rain to help our dry spell, BUT be careful for any flooding! Models continue to show more rain for the end of the week getting into next week as well, so we will keep an eye on that! Graphics below to show some of the things talked about here smile emoticon have a nice rest of Sunday!

Thursday Evening Weather Update - SPRING OUTLOOK SPECIAL

-
Updated: 0150z/21:50/09:50PM

--------------------------2015 SPRING OUTLOOK------------------

Disclaimer: This is Dillon and my first time doing an outlook like this. So bear with us if it is not perfect. Read for the details though and enjoy it smile emoticon
As we get into the heart of spring, and continue on towards summer, please keep in mind that we just went through the second coldest, and one of the snowiest winters on record. These type of sever long term events like to stay for a while, and generally take a long time to leave.
One of the big misconceptions in this world I feel of the general public is that the weather consists of just these storms that move in and out. And that the fronts associated with them govern the temperatures and weather in between... Sadly...this is not the case. There are MILLIONS of other things governing our atmosphere and everyday sensible weather. The biggest thing(s) are the oceans and Sun.
The oceans go through cycles, warm and cold, and their teleconnections and oscillations also go through cycles. Many of these cycles are over 30 years long..some over 60 years. The sun's cycles can sometimes be over 200 years!
Within these big cycles we have smaller cycles, like El Nino's and La Nina's which last typically on average 18 months..sometimes longer and sometimes shorter. Within even that we have the MJO (Madden Julian Oscillation) which is a shorter seasonal variation in the pacific tropics around the dateline that has an effect on our sensible weather, it usually lasts 30-60 days sometimes up to 90 days.
Why am I telling you all of this? It does not help you with knowing the Spring forecast....But, Dillon and I feel it is important, because it helps you understand that there is so much going into every rain drop that falls and every hour of sunshine, fog, snow, etc. that you see. We as humans do not get to see many of these larger pattern shifts, because they are simply too long. Maybe we see 2 or 3 Oscillation switches, 1 major ocean pattern shift, if we are lucky. Because of this, we believe what we see. Unfortunately in the last 30 years we have been in, for the most part the warm cycles of these patterns. This has led the world to believe that the earth will warm an obscene amount in the next 50 years, and that many other things to ruin our planet will happen. Maybe this is true for pollution. Maybe this is true to a certain extent. For the simple and short answer though, for the earth to warm as much as they say it will, the physics of our atmosphere would have to change. We do not see that happening at all anytime soon. So...enough digressing, lets get on to the actual spring forecast.
At the moment we are in a weak/modoki El Nino. Now, there are hints that this could become a stronger El Nino as the year progresses, but for now we will not worry about this. Whats important is that for our spring, the El Nino will not "Directly" affect us. Instead, we will likely see above normal precipitation and temperatures along the Gulf Coast. The pattern during the winter, which was largely governed by warm water off the West coast, Baha and Gulf of Alaska. This set up a -EPO and +PNA for much of the winter, and pumped up a Ridge in the West (Hence the warm and dry weather in the west) and a Trough in the east. This allowed record breaking cold to penetrate deep into the eastern portions of the country, and warm air to filtrate through the west.

What we will begin to see this spring is the Trough that has been prominent in the East to retrograde itself west, and and the ridge in the West to retrograde East. This is also due to the normal changing position of the Jet to its normal Late spring summer position.
That being said, the MJO forecast is not looking promising for SUSTAINED warmth of above average temperatures. What we see is it moving into regions 1,2,3. If you see the pictures, you will see what I mean. The Euro is a bit more bullish then the GFS, but essentially what is happening is the models wanna go back and forth between warm and cold periods...a few days warm a few days cold, dropping troughs every so often and letting High pressure build blocking the jet and pushing Arctic Air south. Based on this assumption of it continuing through April and into the better part of May and maybe beginning of June.

--------
Based on this, our temperatures will look like:
-For the rest of April and likely into May, if not beginning of June, temperatures sticking at or BELOW average (not much) with periodic spikes of above average temperatures (again, not MUCH). Basically back and forth between warm above average temps and late season cold shots.
---------
Precipitation wise this is what we are thinking:
- We should stay fairly dry, not overly wet but not bone dry. Climate maps and models suggesting on average 0 to -1.5" below average for the running monthly mean. That being said, the sensible weather models are hinting at some impressive precipitation amounts over the next 10 even 20 days..its all relative, and frankly overall it should stay around average once everything sorts itself out. As we get into the summer, June/July things will start to get wetter We think, and most likely we will end up with a summer like last year...but that is for the summer outlook wink emoticon
--------
Ok, I think this is about as detailed as you guys want us to get for now....dont wanna bore you to death! If you have any questions please Private m
essage us, email us...etc. Thanks!

Sunday Midday Weather Update - Yucky weather this afternoon

-
Updated: 1700z/13:00/01:00PM
----------------------------------FORECAST----------------------------------
TODAY - Stationary front will set up just to the NORTH of NYC bringing some higher elevation snow to the Catskills, Adirondacks and maybe a dusting of snow at the NY/CT/MA border. Areas NYC and north not getting snow expect a very cold light rain/showers to develop early afternoon around 2PM on and off throughout the evening and into the night clearing out around midnight. South of NYC should be nice, partly cloudy with gusty winds. Highs in the mid 50's to 60's White Plains to NYC, 60's and maybe 70's south of NYC, 40's to mid 30's North and West of NYC. Warmer along the coasts.

MONDAY - Highs in the mid 50's to maybe 60's, especially NYC and SW. Partly Sunny/Cloudy on and off throughout the day.

TUESDAY - Next storm comes in the afternoon/evening... Mostly rain for the area maybe some snow to the North...more on this tomorrow night. Highs mid 40's to 50's and upper 30's to the North and NW.

WEDNESDAY - Another wave comes through, much colder as a cold front will have passed...guys I have a feeling its gonna be a lot more wintry then many think, but for now lets keep the majority of the snow north of the CT/MA border...but watching this carefully. Highs in mid 40's to upper 30's.

--------------------------FORECAST DISCUSSION------------------------
Slowly but surely we are getting to spring guys! Below I have a nice graphic of the average Jet positions during winter and summer...right now the jet is slowly moving from its winter position to its spring/summer position...once we get it up there, and its looking like after April 10th - 13th we start getting in that position and will start feeling real spring like. Our Spring outlook will be coming out in the next few day(s) so you can see all the details from that.

TODAY A stationary front will set up just to the north of NYC and with it will come a wave of low pressure and moisture slug. NOW, right now this front looks to be setting up north enough of NYC that for the most part NYC and south should have a pretty good day. Long Island - you may get some steadier rain this evening, but most of the precip should stay to the north. Mountains, higher elevations could see a coating to an inch of snow...should not stick much though. Westchester folks, gonna be a dicey situation and tricky, but weather should go downhill around 2pm.

IN the meantime...very wintry week coming up for the NE, mostly north of I84 and CT/MA border, HOWEVER there could be some surprises. A couple storms will accompany this, rain and snow for those well to the north.

SEVERE weather outbreak this week as well in the Midwest, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas/Kentucky, probably the most severe so far this season as we will combine the strong jet, a very warm wet northerly flow off the Gulf and cold air from the north...making a very volatile situation.

OK that's it for now, enjoy the rest of your vacation!

Thursday Night Weather Update - Storm after storm coming! Snow? Noppe!

-
Updated: 0220z/22:20/10:19PM
-----------------------------------FORECAST---------------------------------
TONIGHT - Some passing rain showers will spread light rain over the area, otherwise wind getting a bit windier lows in the high 40's maybe into low 50's.

FRIDAY - WARM! Folks I do think we got a GOOD run at 65-70°!!! Now...beggars cannot be choosers, so we do have a storm coming, Nice big storm! Rain showers on and off throughout the day, becoming more steady during the night Friday. Snow with this system will stay WAY to the north near Canadian Border.
SATURDAY - One storm leaves, another comes! Partly cloudy, windy as our fairly large Friday storm moves out...clouds moving in and out. Highs in mid 40's.
SUNDAY - ANOTHER system comes through, Stationary front (tad anafrontal) setup right over NYC or just to the north, where this sets up will be key...whoever is north of it gets bad weather, south good...etc you know the drill. More on this Friday. Highs mid 40's maybe into 50's.
--------------------------FORECAST DISCUSSION------------------------
Many many storms are coming! But is winter over? I am saying - if you live South of Boston - Albany line, for the most part our winter is over...maybe some snow will fall but most likely nothing accumulating anymore until next season! Does that mean spring is here? NO! The Jet is beginning its transition to its normal Spring-Summer position, but we still have plenty of chances for well below average temperatures. NOW, when will the jet change? Still looking at a target period of April 10-13 and after is when we will start looking spring-like.
In the meantime, A very powerful storm will pass over the area tomorrow afternoon/night, which if it was 100 miles more south and with arctic air would be a massive blizzard....unfortunately not the case. SO, very windy as this is a strong and tightly packed system tomorrow and into Saturday night.
Saturday is the day between systems as we get ready for another system to set up over us...this one will be a stationary front that will set up somewhere in the immediate area around NYC...somewhat Anafrontal as the precipitation will be behind the front. Whoever stays south of that front will get nice weather - north of it bad weather. Its a battle of Ossining getting rain and (maybe) some sleet and Irvington getting blustery cloudy skies.
Temperatures for the next few weeks will roller coaster between 30's - 40's and 50-60's even 70° as the jet transitions. Just like rollercoaster November, we now get Rollercoaster April as seasons change.
****WINTER RECAP coming This WEEKEND! and SPRING OUTLOOK coming ALSO this weekend***
HAVE A GREAT NIGHT GUYS!

Wednesday Evening Weather Update - Some big changes coming!

-
Update: 2130z/17:30/05:30PM
FORECAST
TONIGHT - Lows around freezing, a cold front has come through already, however the actual cold air will be delayed until tomorrow.
THURSDAY - Highs in the low to mid 40's, sunny and a bit of a breeze.
FRIDAY - Highs in the low to mid 40's, sunny not as breezy.
SATURDAY - Storm time! Looks like this one will be mainly a soaker, with a bit of snow on the front end possible but little to no accumulation if anything. Still some details to workout, but it will generally be rainy all day long with heavy rain possible. Highs in the low 40's.
FORECAST DISCUSSION
What a nice week we have had!! I bet everybody has appreciated the warmer temps, snow melting and sunny skies! Well...do not get use to it! This was a "false" spring, and the overall pattern is going BACK to our stormy and cold that we experienced for much of the last 3 months. Now, it will not be AS cold..but certainly well below the average temperatures. The "target" period for this pattern will be essentially the 15th through end of March and maybe into early April.
This weekend will feature a nice storm, however, even with colder air being shot in before, it will still be too warm across the board for us to get any real snow out of it, unless you are in Maine and far northern New England - this is a mostly to all rain event.
Getting into next week however, we do see ANOTHER possible storm that could be more snow then rain.
SO...Bottom line is, if you are looking at the point-and-click websites and seeing "End of winter" or "warmer temps coming" - sorry! Not right! Winter still has a hold on us!!!!
Have a great day! and as always, I will quote the Great Joe Bastardi, "Enjoy the weather, its the only weather you got!"

Monday Evening Upcoming Storm(s) Weather Update

Updated: 0100z/20:00/08:00PM
FORECAST
TONIGHT - Pretty much clear, lows in the low teens to single digits maybe in far northern and northwest areas of NY and New England.
TUESDAY - Clear skies will give way to thickening clouds, temperatures in the high 20's to right around 32°, Snow and sleet developing in the LATE afternoon (SEE SNOW MAP), 1-3" (could change, but we doubt it) into the evening and nighttime.
TUESDAY NIGHT - Snow/sleet changing over to ice/sleet/rain and finally all rain by Wednesday morning, nighttime temps around freezing...WATCH out this could be a SERIOUS ice situation as ground is frozen, and a lot OF cold air around...
WEDNESDAY - Ice/wintry mix changing over to all rain in the morning (around rush hour probably maybe a bit sooner/later) will continue throughout the morning, may be a bit heavy at times... Should be a lull in the precipitation during the afternoon as the Initial [storm] moves out then starting again in the evening. Temps in the high 30's to low 40's.
THURSDAY - We have a BIG potential to waking up with NEW snow on the ground and snow falling, as a new wave forms off the back of the Lake Cutter and comes through Wednesday Night through Thursday afternoon/evening...We WILL have cold air in place and this could be a BIG storm...we will keep you posted.
FRIDAY - COLLD Rapid freez up Thursday night, Highs in the low to mid 20's, mostly sunny.
FORECAST DISCUSSION
We have a VERY wild week ahead! A bit of a break today and most of tomorrow before our next storm arrives. A lake cutter will form and move across the area. Since the Center of the Low pressure will be FAR to the N and W of us, it will be a mostly rain event - HOWEVER, we have plenty of cold air in place so watch out for a big THUMP of snow Tuesday evening into the night 1-3" locally 2-4" before a changeover to rain/sleet/ice into Wednesday morning then all rain Wednesday. NOW the interesting part - a brief lull in the precipitation HOWEVER, bucket loads of moisture with this system, and the models have been insistant on another wave forming along the Arctic Frontal Boundary. Cold front will come through Wednesday night, new shot of colder air, and a new wave will form to the SW of us and move ALONG that frontal boundary towards us. THIS would be our all snow event, or Rain to ALL snow event starting Wednesday night and lasting through Thursday Afternoon likely. At this point accumulations could be anywhere from 5 to 10" although that could change. WHEREVER this front boundary sets up is where the axis of heaviest snows will be. If I take an average from ALL the 6 models with snowfall maps, that gives NYC metro area and northern Suburbs 6-8" snow. A wet heavy snow too.
So keep an eye out for our posts - wild week ahead. More cold for Friday as well with a flash freeze Thursday night.
***THE SNOW MAP IS ONLY FOR TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING***

HAVE A GREAT NIGHT!

*****SATURDAY 10pm UPDATE - WILD WEEK AHEAD GUYS, REALLY WILD*****

FIRST, Quick moving quick hitting THUMP of snow late tomorrow afternoon through Monday late morning. A small but somewhat potent system will move through the Ohio valley tonight into tomorrow and then across the area tomorrow evening throughout the night before moving out late Monday morning. NOW, alotta the weather sites saying 1-3" or 2-4" total...GUYS Sorry BUT NOT GONNA BE THAT WAY! Rain snow as well...Nope its gonna be all snow, MAYBE a bit of ice on the backside..
SECONDLY...Mesoscale Banding - VERY important in this storm, maybe more so then in other storms. The models are showing a large amount of southerly winds (flowing to the north) on the warm side of the Arctic air boundary...the models are showing this continue as the storm moves over us. WHERE the edge of this warm wind and cold air meet BOOM thats where we will really get that thumping. NOW the models cannot accuraterly depict this, so they are saying 4-6" (.4-.6" QPF), but wherever those bands set up could easily bring that up 4-8" or 6-10"...NOW, that could be high, Dillon and I think a safe thing to assume is 4-8" for almost all north of NYC...read map to see details

___________________
___________________
NEXT STORM...OMG so much to talk about this, but will wait until Monday to give all the details...Timing likely Tuesday night through Wednesday night maybe into Thursday morning but that could change. It would be Snow to ice to rain to ice to snow to all snow and could be a lotta snow if this holds up - models trending colder by the day! Goodbye brief warmup!
___________________
___________________
SOO.. still slowly creeping back to normal ISH temperatures in the next couple weeks, but the models are holding fast for below average temps at least next 40 days...soo we will keep you updated!

TONIGHT - Cold lows in low teens to around 10°, clear, but getting cloudy.
SUNDAY - Cloudy with light snow developing between 3-6pm changing to a heavier more steady snow during the late evening through the nighttime. Highs in the mid to high 20's. WATCH out for that thumping, talked about above in the afternoon.
SUNDAY NIGHT - Snow, HEAVY at times with THUMPING possible, maybe changing to ice/sleet for a brief period at the end. The storm will be outta hear by lunchtime the LATEST in NYC, most likely between 7-9am.
MONDAY - Snow ending between 7-9am, highs in the low 30's
TUESDAY - Cloudy highs in the high 20's to low 30's...storm approaching at night, more on this later.

********WEDNESDAY EVENING 8:30PM UPDATE**********

Sorry about no update last night, Dillon and me were both very busy, and we did not feel there was enough to make a meaningful post. Its been a quiet week!
*****************
Feels warm past couple of days right! SLOWLY, ever so slowly we are trending (barely noticeable) back to "average" temperatures...Now the question is will we get back to Average or ABOVE average? At least in the next 2 weeks - We doubt it. Maybe a few small warm ups here and there for a couple hours...but overall models trending Below to WELL below average for the next several days, into the 2-3 week margin...maybe even through the next 45 days?
*****************
Many storms on the horizon, first big one would be Sunday to maybe Tuesday, likely Sunday night - Monday night. Right now Rain/ice to snow maybe back to rain or all snow...many details to workout too early too say much.
Tomorrow morning chance of light snow and some snow showers as a system passes to the south. Little to no accumulation for us.
*****************
TONIGHT - Lows near 10° progressively colder North and NW of NYC. Clear but becoming cloudy as the night goes on.
THURSDAY - Possible Light snow/snow showers (Most likely some flurries - BUT) No accumulations likely. Highs in the low to mid 20's.
FRIDAY - Highs in the mid 20's, some sun some clouds.
SATURDAY - Sunny highs near 30°, overall a pleasant day smile emoticon
HAVE A GREAT NIGHT GUYS!

**********10:45 AM UPDATE ON WINTER STORM LINUS [#LINUS]*********

VERY VERY HAPPY WITH THE FORECAST THAT DILLON AND ME PUT OUT LAST NIGHT, VERY HAPPY. 7.58" SO FAR, NO RAIN YET JUST SLEET AND ICE AND SNOW.

The storm ended up coming in a tad weaker and was not able to push that Arctic HP as much away, therefore cold air lasted longer.

SO WHATS NEXT?

We have a Secondary low trying to/succesfully ish forming off the Delmarva Peninsula (Well really between Jersey Coast and Delmarva) and THIS will drain some more cold air south and fuel a redevelopment of precipitation as the two fronts collide LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

SO...SLEET, ICE, SNOW will CONTINUE for the next few hours AND THEN a POTENTIAL HEAVY BAND OF SNOW WILL DEVELOP AFTER LUNCH AS THE BACKSIDE OF ALL THIS MOISTURE WRAPS AROUND and the Secondary low moves NE.

REST OF TODAY - Snow/Sleet/Ice continuing and then turning back to an all snow solution after lunch for a TIME. SNOW COULD BE HEAVY. Additional accumulations of 1-4" ARE POSSIBLE as that heavy band comes through, WE WILL UPDATE ACCORDINGLY.
Temperatures in the High 20's in NYC to Low 20's in Westchester and PROGRESSIVELY colder as you get N/NW/NE of NYC. IMMEDIATE COASTAL AREAS - MORE OF A RAIN/SLEET MIXTURE.

FLASH FREEZE IN EFFECT FOR THIS EVENING, TEMPERATURES DROPPING 20-30° FOR SOME TO LOW TO MID TEENS OR UPPER SINGLE DIGITS. ALL STANDING WATER, MELTED PRECIP, UNTREATED ROADS, ETC WILL FREEZE

All precipitation will taper off this evening into nighttime and gradually clear by midnight.

PLACES SOUTH OF YONKERS, COASTAL CT, LONG ISLAND...YOU WILL HAVE A POTENTIAL COMPLETE MESS OF ICE ON YOUR HANDS AS TEMPERATURES RAPIDLY DROP AND MOISTURE MOVES IN, PRECIP KEEPS FALLING. BE CAREFUL

Additional Snow accumulation map below.

ANY QUESTIONS? IF SO POST IT BELOW IN THE COMMENTS OR MESSAGE ME OR DILLON.

*********************QUICK Sunday Afternoon Update!**************

The GFS and the NAM have continued their northward trend since yesterday, meaning that there is the chance of less snow and more mixed precipitation especially during the height of the storm on Monday. However, this means SIGNIFICANT ICING is becoming increasingly likely, which is much worse than an extra few inches of snow. For now, though, Remy and I will keep our forecast from last night and will re-post the snow/ice map we made yesterday as the European and Canadian models from midnight are sticking with significant snowfall for the area. Based on some of the data right now, the GFS and the NAM may be too warm with the storm, and they might head towards a solution closer to the European and Canadian models later in the day. Our current snowfall map is more of an average between the four models. We will follow this storm throughout the day and post again later on this afternoon around 5:00 PM when the next model runs come in.

Here is yesterday's snow map, which (for now) still applies:

*******EVENING UPDATE*******

Rain will continue for the next 4-5 hours and WILL PROBABLY BE HEAVY FOR A GOOD CHUNK OF THAT TIME. Would not be surprised if we see another 1/2" of rain by the time this is over.

Cold air will sweep in on the backside of the system bringing in cold and dry air. Because of the "DRY" aspect of this air, I doubt we will be seeing the possible end as snow period I talked about last night - MAYBE a few flurries. Should be out of here by Midnight at the latest.

Temperatures will dip back into the mid to high 20's tonight...BE CAREFUL..ALL OF THAT STANDING WATER WILL FREEZE UP!!!
Looking at a VERY POSSIBLE decent Clipper for Wednesday - Will have to wait and see how this shapes up.

Some models indicating a return of the cold in a BIG way - watch out.

Cya folks be safe!!!

*******SATURDAY EVENING UPDATE, STORM DISCUSSION!**********

****ISSUING A HEAVY RAIN/FLOODING WARNING FOR SUNDAY MIDDAY THROUGH EVENING*******

****ISSUING A BRIEF PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN/MAYBE SNOW/SNIZZLE FOR SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH MIDDAY****

*****ISSUING A POSSIBLE, POSSIBLE PERIOD OF SNOW SUNDAY NIGHT AS COLD AIR SWEEPS BACK IN - COULD BE MODERATE FOR 2-4 HOURS, ***IF IT HAPPENS, ONLY IF******

As a very strong upper level disturbance swings through Southern Canada, some of the energy from that will drop down and form a small wave off the edge of a cold front off the coast of the Carolina's....this wave will move NE following the Eastern Seaboard and intensify, and phase its energy as it moves over Long Island/ Southern New England. As it intensifies over S.E. N.E it will jog east a bit...NOW, Dillon and I are going on a hunch here - as it jogs east, it will allow more cold air to infiltrate, and what we think may happen is a BRIEF, 2-4 hours MAX period of snow from NYC/SUBURBS and NE as the precipitation field is thrown back a little bit. NOW, Am I expecting any significant accumulation? NO....is it possible that we do get SOME accumulation? YES! Only time will tell, so we will update on this particular issue tomorrow.

Other problems with this system, and it is illustrated below on the maps, We ONCE again have below freezing temperatures to deal with at the surface, and on the surface..but then we have this NASTY layer of warm air centered around 925mB that will keep the snow from staying snow as it falls, because if you think about it - basically a sandwhich, COLD - WARM - COLD...very frusterating, but hey its the only weather we have lets love it, as Joe Bastardi always says....SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? WELL...Freezing rain will be an IMPORTANT feature of this system as it comes in the morning....

I think enough said...here is our Forecast:

TONIGHT - Clear skies will become overcast towards dawn, temps in the low to mid 20's.

TOMORROW - Rain Showers/Freezing rain, and possibly some snow mixing in the morning will evolve into a steady and MOST PROBABLY HEAVY Rain in the afternoon - GUYS BE CAREFUL! 2" OF RAIN ON FROZEN GROUND WILL FLOOD AND NOT SOAK UP INTO THE GROUND! PLEASE!. Temperatures steady in the mid to upper 30's...I DOUBT we will get past 40°. Also, DO NOT be surprised if you see/hear lightning/thunder.

TOMORROW NIGHT- Rain will taper off in the evening, and WE MIGHT, POSSIBLY END as a BRIEF period of moderate snow as the cold air infiltrates in and the precipitation begins to move out. Temperatures in the low to mid 20's.

Guys, the TOTAL precipitation forecast for our Area is 1.95" of Liquid. Since we are not expecting any snow accumulations, or major ice accumulations, this will be 2" of RAIN. Ground that is frozen does NOT soak up rain. THIS WILL FLOOD! BE CAREFUL ON THE ROADS AND DRIVING!!!

MAPS VERY IMPORTANT, TAKE A LOOK!!!

BE SAFE AND HAVE A GOOD NIGHT FOLKS!

********THURSDAY EVENING UPDATE, BIGGIE*********

OKI DOKI FOLKS...WE GOT A COUPLE NICE DAYS OF WEATHER...THEN WE HAVE A GOOD CHANCE AT IT ALL KINDA GOES DOWNHILL FOR NEXT WEEK  WINTER STYLE...SO GET READY!

- Looking at essentially 3 events over the next week:

One tonight into early tomorrow morning, THIS is our clipper, maybe 1-2" of fluff in the wee hours before it moves out, essentially acting as if it is a frontal wedge coming through the area...do not be surprised if we get some blurbs of 1-3" or more!

Second one Sunday night through Monday night - Dont know SPECIFICS yet, but lets say for now a mix of snow/ice/maybe rain and just icky!

THIRD one for Wednesday Night through Friday Morning, this one will likely be the biggest of the week, looking at again snow/sleet/ice/maybe some rain.

I am just putting it out there, DO NOT take this as a forecast, but I would NOT be surprised if by the end of next week we have a good 4-8" of snow on the ground if not more...AS OF NOW! AGAIN THIS CAN ALL CHANGE!

- COLD will start to ease off a bit for the weekend and into next week into low to mid 30's, but then it is looking likely that we will drop back down into 20's or colder after that!

- WINTER HAS ARRIVED, THIS IS ALL I CAN SAY!

CURRENT conditions at IHS Weather Station:

Temp: 16.5*F
Humidity: 64% and rising
Pressure: 30.27"
Winds: WSW @ 3 mph
DewPoint: 7*

Today we reached a high of 20.3 at 3pm, a low of 4.2* at 4am.

*******FORECAST******

TONIGHT - Temps dropping down to near 10*, clear becoming cloudy, some snow showers/light snow breaking out in the very early hours, max 1-2" of fluff.

FRIDAY - Snow showers/light snow in early morning taper off to snow showers, should clear up a bit partly cloudy by afternoon. Areas to the North and West will be a bit colder and have some longer bouts of snow...Temps rising to mid 20's...again colder North of NYC.

SATURDAY - Temps in mid to high 20's, clear, nothing really to worry about!

SUNDAY - Partly cloudy temps around 30* maybe low 30's, getting cloudier...storm possibly arriving nighttime - MORE later on this!

WILL GET INTO NEXT WEEK OVER WEEKEND!

********EVENING UPDATE******

I am happy to say that the snow amounts that I forecasted came out more or less right on target! I knew that there was too muhc cold air here that it would be all rain today  silly weather sites

SO,.. Here is the deal! Forecast for the rest of the night and tomorrow:

TONIGHT - Snow/Sleet will turn to Sleet and then ALL rain by 9pm for pretty much everybody south of Albany. Peoples North of Albany and Concord, NH expect it to stay an icey/sleety/snowy mix until late tonight before changing over to all rain. Temps will rise to mid to HIGH 30's.

TOMORROW - WOW MUCH WARMER! I dont think nearly as warm as some are saying (61*!) BUT we will definately get up into 50's, and possibly break that 60* mark, but probably only for folks SOUTH of I287/Thruway.

MONDAY - First cold front moves through Sunday night finish up its passage Monday, temps in the mid 30's, partly cloudy.

GETTING INTO TUESDAY We have an Alberta Clipper that will MOST LIKELY affect us Tuesday afternoon into evening. Since Alberta Clippers are fast and hard to predict until they are basically on our doorstep, we will get into this Monday night!

Latest Radar image below!

****MIDDAY UPDATE FOR THE STORM****

Snow Still falling at a good clip here in Irvington, expect it to stay as a Snow/Sleet mix for the next several hours for ALL areas NORTH of I95/I84 before changing over to an Icey rain to all rain by nightfall. Unless you are FAR north, WELL north of Albany, do not expect it to stay as snow past dinner time.

TOTAL daytime accumulations 1-2" and MAYBE 1-3" in the hills, Elevation dependent.

Warm air starting to surge in as you can see on the image I have posted below..expect temps to go up into the mid to high 30's as it changes over to rain. Tomorrow HIGHS in the low to mid 50's. Rain. MORE ON THIS TONIGHT.

Have a great day!

Friday Night discussion and Forecast for Weekend storm, SNOW Forecast map

BOY DO WE HAVE AN INTERESTING STORM COMING!

OK, Here is the deal...I am looking at 4 different models right now and ALL of them are telling me one thing, while the websites you might be going on like weather.com might be telling you the complete opposite of what I am about to forecast for tomorrow. I am NOT saying these sites are wrong, but what I am seeing on the models and how I am interpreting it is telling me we are in for a whole different story then what they say! I will explain this below.

Step #1 - Storm has already formed in the South/mid area of our country over Texas and will continue to move NE over the Great Lakes and join up with a small system that is dropping down from Farther North. As it moves through those lakes it will intensify, and have the opportunity to start bringing in warmer air.

Step #2 - COLD AIR! YESS! TONS OF IT AHEAD OF THE SYSTEM, AND TONS BEHIND! The PROBLEM is the Area of High pressure that we need to just sit put and let that cold air stay will be moved and decimated by the system, which WILL allow it to bring in the warmer air at the surface during the NIGHT on Saturday into Sunday night. The Southern Jet will help with this too. SO, Start as some Snow/Icey/Slushy mix as the cold and dry air that is already around will be cold enough for snow, and then as the colder air is replaces by warmer moist air in the evening of tomorrow it will turn over to rain for the night and into Sunday, and move out Sunday night...Sound like a plan??!

SO HERE IS MY FORECAST:

TONIGHT - COLD in the mid 20's, clear becoming quite cloudy.

TOMORROW - Cloudy in the morning, SNOW most likely starting lunch time to 2pm IT COULD COME IN HEAVY and be quite nasty until the evening!!! Highs low to mid 30's, colder to the North and West. Areas North of Hudson, Windham/Kingston area...It WILL be not FUN to be OUT up there!!!

TOMORROW NIGHT - Changeover to Sleet mid evening hours and all over to rain by 9pm for ALMOST ALL even up into Northern NY and Southern New England. Nighttime temps will rise to MID to HIGH 30'S as the system brings in all the warm air and continues its trek.

SUNDAY - Highs rising into low to mid 50's for almost all up even past Albany then into 40's north of there. Rain and maybe some Thunder in the morning will begin to clear out of the Hudson valley area in the afternoon, nighttime for areas east of NY.

MONDAY - COLDDDD FRONTS MOVE IN and Probably bring some of the coldest, if not the coldest air of this season with it! Monday wont be AS cold Highs in the low to mid 30's

TUESDAY - Highs in the mid 20's...Probably a clipper in the afternoon evening, usually clippers bring 2-4, 3-5" of snow...so we shall see!

Thanks again to Weatherbell and Dr. Maue for the AMAZING MAPS AND GRAPHICS!

********TUESDAY NIGHT FORECAST/DISCUSSION, UPDATES ON WINTER STORM FOR WEEKEND...BIGGIE!***************

-POTENTIAL FOR A [BIG?] WINTER(Y) Type storm coming onto the short term models for this weekend, Saturday Night through Sunday night...maybe just maybe into Monday morning. DETAILS BELOW
- Tug Hill area off of Lake Ontario, Watertown area - LAKE EFFECT SNOW WATCHES/WARNINGS IN EFFECT UNTIL FRIDAY MORNING. I would Not be surprised if you guys see anywhere from 1-2 feet or MORE in the persistent bands. So ENJOY IT, IF YOU ARE A SNOW LOVER...I WISH I WAS THERE I KNOW THAT!

- The Euro models AND the GFS are hinting at a MAJOR COLD SHOT in the 6-10 day period from now, I am talking 25+ degrees below average, possibly having a 0* day in NYC...I AM NOT SAYING THIS WILL HAPPEN, HOWEVER, IT IS SOMETHING TO KEEP AN EYE OUT THAT A BIG COLD SHOT MAY BE COMING...
**********WINTER STORM DETAILS for the Scenario I deem likely AT THIS POINT*******
STEP #1 Energy from the storm that will be affecting the Midwest and parts of the West Coast on New Years will move across the country while another area of low pressure that will bring some snow to the Northern Plains and North West drops down to the great lakes. THESE TWO SYSTEMS MERGE, and form what we weather weenies call "Lake Cutters" Basically the system will cut across the lake, and gather moisture, intensifying greatly...

STEP #2 The storm will LIKELY take this more NORTHERLY track (Although I think it will be further south, MORE COLD) and Consequently, as it moves through the area, it will suck in warm air from the south. SO AGAIN, ALONG THOSE COASTAL REGIONS...WATCH OUT IT WILL MOST LIKELY BE A MORE WET THAN SNOWY STORM, MORE ICEY TOO....HOWEVER:
1. As the storm makes its way through the area, it will bring in the warmer air from the south, however for a brief period of time..SO, even if it does get up to LOW 40's during middle of day, the storm will still be around later AND there will be PLENTY of cold air aloft for it to deal with - therefore, I think we are in for a more snowy event then we think....BUT...lets stick to more rain for now.

STEP #3...The system will move out of the area by Sunday night, leaving us MUCH colder as it brings in the cold air behind it.

GUYS, I AM VERY WORRIED ABOUT THIS SYSTEM...The models are treating it as basically a "FRONTAL" system moving through the area, like a cold front...BUT IT IS NOT THAT! FURTHERMORE, the models are trying to "tear" the system apart as it moves through Western New York because of the INTENSE High pressure to the north of the system...I DO NOT THINK THIS WILL HAPPEN, AND THINK THE SYSTEM WILL TAKE A SLIGHTLY MORE SOUTHERN TRACK and CONSEQUENTLY be a colder storm for everybody.

One thing of IMPORTANCE, and of great interest...The NAO, which many people look to when they want to know when cold may be coming is NOT TO BE TRUSTED RIGHT NOW.... Last couple of weeks we had unusually HIGH temperatures and the NAO went NEGATIVE (Usually goes POSITIVE for Warmer Temps)...NOW we are getting colder and the NAO is going POSITIVE!...So, wacky things going on! Lets wait until mid February before we look at it as an Indicator of Warm/cold.

OK ENOUGH BLABBER RIGHT NOW!

*********************FORECAST****************************

TONIGHT - COLLDDDD in the low 20's to High teens in the Northern Suburbs and interior NY...Along the coast a tad warmer. Clear, maybe some passing clouds.

WEDNESDAY/NEW YEARS EVE - Highs JUST about Freezing, again colder to the North and interior NY, warmer along the coast, sunny...a slight wind.

THURSDAY - Around the same temps, windy

FRIDAY - A TAD warmer, in the mid 30's, Sunny still windy.

PICS EXPLAINING THE WHOLE THING!

HAVE A NICE NIGHT FOLKS! And a HAPPY NEW YEARS!

********MONDAY EVENING DISCUSSION***********

FEW POINTS OF DISCUSSION

-The Possibility of a potentially major storm is VERY MUCH in the realm of possibility for Saturday night into Sunday night (20-21st). SO KEEP AN EYE ON THE POSTS COMING FROM HERE, WE WILL HAVE THE LATEST UPDATES.

- AO/NAO/EPO/WPO/PNA ALL TANK AROUND 24TH-26TH SO IT SEEMS, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? WELL ESSENTIALLY THAT WINTER WILL REALLY BE LOCKING IN - COLD, STORMINESS...MUCH LIKE THE PATTERN BACK IN NOVEMBER, BUT MORE SUSTAINED AND STORMY.

- ANOTHER POSSIBLE STORM, YES, Right on the heels of the possible Saturday-Sunday Storm we get ANOTHER for Christmas...Details still vague but the possibility, again DEFINITELY there!!!

- THE BLOCKING we have been waiting for (or at least I have) will begin to set up between and after the Sunday and Christmas storms, coinciding with the Oscillations/Teleconnections tanking!

***********************FORECASTIC FORECAST**********************

TONIGHT - Highs in the HIGH 20's, clear

TUESDAY - Partly Cloudy skies over to all cloudy w/ showers developing in the evening and changing over to all rain in the night, MAYBE a bit of freezing sleet/ice for a bit but I am doubtful. Highs in the mid 40's, lows in the HIGH 30's. Areas in Northern NY, Southern NE...maybe even Boston could see some snow showers/light snow on the backside.

WEDNESDAY - BIG WARMUP! HIGHS NEAR 50*, Partly Cloudy

THURSDAY - Highs back down to high 30's, sunny.

FRIDAY - Highs low to mid 30's, sunny.

WILL GET TO WEEKEND LATER!

Wednesday Night FORECAST + DISCUSSION + Next week Storm? West Coast Deluge

Lemme try and be brief tonight, but FIRST...SHAMWOWZA...Syracuse and Ithaca Area, up in the hills around there being SLAMMED! Some places up there have recorded a FOOT so far and blizzard conditions continue, especially as you get CLOSER to the lakes and start getting into the Lake effect snow (Not AS pronounced because the winds not IDEAL) ANYWAY, within the next couple of days I will post storm totals for snowfall/rain/ice from this WINTER STORM, which by the way was named DAMON.

NOW, Forecast discussion:

TONIGHT - Still seeing the chance for more snow in the area, ESPECIALLY as you get NW of NYC (WAY NW)...and somewhat North. Do not see any significant accumulations, maybe 1" at BEST. Lows in the low 30's, winds still up there.

THURSDAY - Cloudy, chance of snow showers especially in the morning as the system FINALLY begins its way out. Highs in the mid 30's, colder as you get inland and NW...Along the coast look for slightly warmer temps mid to high 30's, up through the Mass/Boston Areas. Interior NY into the mountains will see highs mid 20's to LOW 30's.

FRIDAY - Storm moves out, HIGH pressure begins to take over the area, MOSTLY sunny skies highs in the mid 30's all the way up the coast, maybe in low 40's around the Cape...maybe 40* in Boston along the water. Interior NY still stuck in the 20's.

Getting interested in our NEXT possible storm (Nor'easter maybe???) for next week, towards the end of the week probably....Energy exiting to the SW of California will catch the Southern Jet and move Eastward where it either goes out to see or follows up the coast - WE SHALL SEE!

IN THE MEAN TIME, LETS LET AND PRAY THAT ENERGY REALLY STAYS AROUND THE WEST FOR A WHILE AND EASE THE DROUGHT! Could be one of the strongest storms in a DECADE for them! San Francisco, LA, Sacramento and pretty much ALL of Cali in for a BIG deluge!!!!! In addition Cali Ski Slopes could be seeing a FOOT PLUS of the white stuff!

HAVE A NICE NIGHT FOLKS!
